Introductory offers and price rises

Checked Oct 2026 · numbers from the live index and the SSA UK 2026 report

The first price gets you in. The second price is the business model.

Big-brand storage marketing leans on one device: a deep introductory discount, usually 50% off for the first 8 weeks, sometimes with a van thrown in. There is nothing wrong with taking it, as long as you budget on the standard rate, because that is the rate you will live on.

What an offer is worth

On a 25 sq ft unit at the UK average (£68.50 a month), 50% off for 8 weeks saves about £68.50. Over a 3 month stay the discount is meaningful; over a year it fades to about 8% of the bill. The longer you stay, the less the offer matters and the more the standard rate does.

In-term price rises

Storage agreements are rolling licences, and most reserve the right to change the rate with notice, commonly 28 days. SSA UK Annual Industry Report 2026 reports 96.6% of units turning over within a year, which means operators can reprice the whole estate quickly. Three defences:

  • Note the standard rate in writing on day one, offer aside.
  • Diary the offer's end date; the jump lands there, not at renewal.
  • Stay portable. The cost of switching stores is one van day; operators price rises on the assumption you will not bother.

On Storage Index, the headline figure is always the standard price; an offer shows as a note with its end date. A comparison built on teaser rates would flatter whoever discounts hardest, not whoever charges least.

Questions

Are storage introductory offers worth it?

Yes, for short stays: 50% off 8 weeks on a typical 25 sq ft unit saves about £68.50. For stays past 6 months the standard rate dominates the bill, so compare that, not the offer.

Can a storage company raise prices mid-stay?

Usually yes, with notice (28 days is common) under a rolling licence. Check the agreement and diary the introductory offer's end date, which is when the first jump lands.

Why does Storage Index show standard prices, not offers?

Because offers expire and standard rates are what a stay really costs. Offers appear as dated notes beside the standard price, never as the headline.
